Services and Rehearsals
Rehearsals
Thursdays 17:00 - 19:00
Sundays from 16:00 with Evensong at 18:00
Our main service of the week is Evensong on Sunday. This is a traditional service where the choir sing a setting of the Canticles, Psalm, Responses as well as an Anthem. Whilst we are a voluntary choir, excellent attendance, assured dedication and a firm commitment are required to ensure we perform to the best of our ability. Previous experience, although helpful, is not in any way necessary and we welcome all newcomers to choral music. If you are interested, please feel free to get in touch with either organ scholar and they will invite you to a rehearsal where you can see if Trinity College Chapel Choir is right for you.
Unlike many college choirs in Oxford, we have no director of music - the running of the choir is entirely left to the two organ scholars and is overseen by the chaplain. The organ scholars work together to create music lists, lead rehearsals, manage the music library, help organise tours and cathedral visits, and many other activities. As organ scholars, they are entitled to a room on site for the entirety of their course, equipped with a clavinova, and are allowed to claim money from the college towards organ tuition.
As of 2012, Ralph Allwood MBE has been appointed Advisor to Chapel Music at Trinity College, Oxford. He will work closely in mentoring the organ scholars in matters concerning choral direction, as well as frequently visit the choir to check on progress and give choral workshops to aid the development of the choir as a whole.
As well as organ scholarships, the college offers choral scholarships. The choral scholars are given free singing lessons and are expected to lead their sections in both services and rehearsals. They should know a lot of the key repertoire well, or at least be able to sight-sing the majority of it, and should lead by example in rehearsals. There are also spaces for choral exhibitions for members of the choir, who will be offered the opportunity of receiving professional vocal coaching from our designated professional, Joanna Campion-Watt.
There is also sung Compline on Wednesdays once a fortnight at 21:30 in chapel. This is sung by volunteers from the choir, and coordinated by our compline rep.
